Installing PostgreSQL (Postgres) on macOS

Getting started with developing backends that utilize PostgreSQL can be a bit tedious, especially if you're new to the process. But don't worry, we'll guide you through every step to get PostgreSQL version 12 set up on your Mac.

To begin with, make sure you have Homebrew installed on your mac. If not, follow the instructions on the Homebrew website to install it.

Once you've got Homebrew installed and working, you can install Postgres! To do this, run the following command in your terminal: `brew install postgresql`

If you want to install a specific version of Postgres other than the latest one, you can specify the version when installing. For example: `brew install postgresql@12`

Next, you need to start the Postgres service using Homebrew: `brew services start postgresql`

After that, you'll need to enable md5 authentication for localhost connections. This is a crucial step, as we're going to create a user with a password.

Now, let's create our first Postgres user and set up the database. Open your terminal and type the following command: `psql -U postgres`

You'll be prompted to enter your password. For now, just press Enter, as we haven't set a password yet.

To connect to a Postgres server via TCP, we need to enable md5 authentication and then create a user with a password.

Once you're connected to the psql shell, you can create a new database by typing: `CREATE DATABASE mydatabase;`

Next, let's create our first user. Run the following command: `CREATE ROLE myuser WITH PASSWORD 'mypassword';`

Now, grant the user access to the database we created earlier: `GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON DATABASE mydatabase TO myuser;`

The last step is to update the pg_hba.conf file to allow connections from localhost. You can do this by running: `sudo nano /usr/local/var/postgres/pg_hba.conf` and adding the following lines at the end of the file:

Save the file and restart Postgres using: `brew services restart postgresql`
